- Subject: HTX-202 Is this a good starter rig?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- There is another ~$200 HT that should be considered
- when looking at the Radio Shack rigs. I've had good
- experience with the Alinco dj-162. AES is closing these
- out at $200. This includes both a nicad and a charger
- and an alkaline battery case. I have two of these radios.
- I bought the second recently based on my positive
- experience with the first.
-
- As far as the Radio Shack unit goes-I saw my first one up
- close recently. Personally I prefer my Alincos. The RS
- radio is BIG. I can't see carrying the RS rig in my ski
- jacket pocket. The RS rig did have good sounding audio
- persumably due to its relatively larger speaker.
-
- The RS rig does not have out of band receive...yes I understand the
- tradeoff. The only time I get any intermod is when using
- my outside antenna. No intermod or spurious signals in the
- car or mobile except downtown...where my Icom mobile also
- goes crazy.
-
- I'm not saying the RS radio is not good or the Alinco
- is better...for everyone for every use. I just want
- to keep Alinco's on the shopping list for a ~$200 HT.
- I've been very happy with the Alinco.
-
- ...Dennis Henderson, N6TTW
-
- ps: Whatever you buy get a Hotrod type ~40inch telescopic
- antenna for when you really need to be heard. The Larsen
- version unscrews in the middle and is easily carried
- in a small camera bag that I use to carry the HT and
- other accessories.

- I am wondering if the Radio Shack HTX-202 is a good starter unit? All of the
- ones I have seen in the swap group have been sold, so it looks like I am
- going to buy one brand new.
-
- The fact that they enjoy fast sales on the secondary market should give
- you a clue to their reputation. I think you'll be happy with the HTX-202
- unless you expect it to do double duty as scanner outside of the amateur
- radio band.
-
- I can't say anything about the MFJ antenna, perhaps someone else with
- better knowledge can offer you advice there.
-
- Use the finest coax that you can afford. Fifty feet of lossy coax
- will kill your signal and negate the advantage of the elevation.
-
- Sounds like a good plan overall.

- By simply doing it. YOU have to sue the state for Federal compliance in such

- I can't speak from personal experience because I don't own any of the
- dual-banders named in this discussion (I own an Icom W2A that I've been

- And it has a backlit keypad. That's the dual bander I'd buy right now if

-
- [stuff deleted]
-
-
- The Kenwood has a six-character alphanumeric display & memory, while
- the Yaesu does not. Apparently, you can get an optional microphone
- for the Yaesu that does have an alpha display, but I haven't seen it,
- and I'm sure it's pricey.
-
- I really appreciate the alphanumeric display. I travel quite a bit plus I
- have a significant number of public safety frequencies programmed into my
- TH-78A. The alphanumeric display makes keeping track of all the frequencies
- a lot easier than actually trying to remember the frequencies themselves.
- This is particularly valuable when I have the same frequency pair with
- different pl's for different areas.
-
- The Yaesu has "CTCSS" included while it's an extra option on the
- Kenwood. I have no idea what that feature does, but radios that have
- it seem to boast about it. The Yaesu also has some kind of Automatic
- Tone Search feature that I don't yet understand.
-
- CTCSS was standard on my 78A, I believe it still is. CTCSS will use pl on
- your receive. That is, your squelch will not open unless the signal is
- carrying the correct pl. I use this feature to combat the effects of
- intermod (see below). Most 70cm and many 2m repeaters around here put a pl
- on their output, as do all the public service repeaters. My "home" repeater
- will after our next servicing (whenever we get it down from the roof, Alan
- (private joke, sorry netters)).
-
- Both radios can do VHF/VHF and UHF/UHF, but some people say that this
- adds interference.
-
- It most certainly does Ollie. I still think it is worth it. As I noted
- above, I use the CTCSS feature to mitigate the intermod. Note that CTCSS
- does delay the squelch opening about half a second, so those who quick-key
- get the beginning of their sentences clipped. I also like the fact that all
- memories are programmable for either band on the 78, and that each side of
- the radio can operate in either band. In other words, I can run 440/144 or
- 144/144 or 440/440 at any time. This can be real handy.
-
- The Yaesu has 82 memories, the Kenwood 50 (expandable to 250?).The
- Yaesu has a light-up keypad, and I don't think the Kenwood does. The
- Kenwood does, however, have some internal video games :-).
-
- The 78A does indeed have a back-lit keypad and display. You can turn it on
- and it will stay on as long as there is activity on the controls, then drop
- out for battery savings, or you can turn it on and lock it on. As to the
- memory - the memory expansion is about the only internal option that did
- not come with the radio. I think I paid about $25.00 for it, it's running
- somewhat higher now. Bear in mind that if you use the alphanumeric display,
- the available memory slots are cut in half, so you only get 125 slots.
- Still an awful lot of memory.
-
- I've only been shopping for a few days, and I'm beginning to wonder
- why I don't see much of the Kenwood TH-78A mentioned in comparisons.
- The general list of recommended models seems to be: ICOM W21AT,
- Standard C558, Yaesu FT-530, Alinco DJ-580T with no mention of the
- Kenwood. Hmmm... Is there some glaring problem with this unit that
- takes it right out of the running from the start?
-
- Would you compare your product to a superior one in your ad? :-) Actually,
- the 78A has been getting what I feel is bad press re: intermod. Yes, the
- radio is susceptible to intermod, as is any dual band wide receive HT on
- the market. My experience is that the 78A is somewhat worse than the FT-470
- for intermod, and somewhat better than the FT-530. Your mileage may vary,
- taxes and dealer prep. not included. Since the 78A hit the market ahead of
- the 530, the 78A took the hit. Intermod was old news when the 530 came out.
-
- I'm anxious to hear what other net.folks have to say about these two
- models.
-
- And you now have my .02 worth.

-
-
- Now according to my understanding, in a matter of life or property
- anybody is permitted to transmit on any frequency in any mode necessary
- to communicate with emergency personel. This is an FCC issued federal
- law.
-
- Gary Morris KK6YB [garym@alsys.com] previously posted the following regarding
- the ham who had his HT confiscated by the San Diego, CA Sheriff's office. I'm
- sure this is the story your friend was referring to:
-
- There have been two articles in the San Diego Union, they are on the
- bulletin board at HRO. Here is a summary of the first one, I don't have
- a copy of the second article.
-
- The article states that everyone acknowledges that it was the ``act of a
- good Samaritan.'' but that ``authorities confiscated Chris Boyer's
- portable ham radio last month after he used it to obtain emergency
- medical help for a seriously injured friend.'' It states that he ran
- into trouble because he called for help on a Sheriff's Department
- frequency that he isn't authorized to transmit on. They quote William
- Grigsby, engineer in charge of the San Diego FCC office: ``"Under the
- regulatory scheme, ... this kind of operation by persons who are not
- authorized is strictly prohibited,'' he is also quoted to say that ``We
- can't have a situation where everyone who wants to have a transmitter on
- the police or sheriff's frequency can, if this continues, we're going to
- have chaos for the law enforcement system.''
-
- It states that Boyer tried to get help on five other repeaters but
- couldn't get anyone, they also tried a cellular phone but couldn't
- connect because they were ``in a ravine, toward the bottom of a
- canyon''. He then rode up the trail a half mile and tried again from a
- better spot but still couldn't get through, at that point they decided
- to try the SO frequency. The article says `` "I look and this guy's
- bleeding, he's taken a head trauma," Boyer said. "I came on, gave my
- call sign - I wasn't trying to hide - and said, 'I'm a radio amateur
- with emergency traffic.' The dispatcher said, 'Go ahead.'" ''
-
- Two weeks later, he got a letter from Bill Kahn (communications
- coordinator) for the SO, telling him to meet with Kahn and an FCC
- person. He was given the choice of having to ``forfeit'' or be
- prosecuted by the federal government.
-
- There are several quotes from different people including this one
- from county Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who represents that part of the
- county. ``"The frequencies are protected for public-safety emergencies,"
- Jacob said. "Well, this individual had an emergency.''... ``"I think
- anyone in the same circumstances, including myself, would do the same
- thing."''
-
-
- I understand there was a fuss of some kind between the Sheriff's office and the
- County Supervisors over this. I'm more concerned about the FCC Engineer who not
- only let this happen, but participated. Perhaps Gary or someone else from the
- San Diego area could post an update.
